The Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) is an exceptional blend of highly expansive sodium base bentonite, meticulously sandwiched between a unique composite geotextile and nonwoven fabric. Crafted using advanced needle-punching or stitching techniques, this composite forms an impervious barrier. The needle-punching process creates numerous tiny fiber spaces, ensuring that the bentonite particles remain stable, preventing directional flow. When activated by water, the mat develops a uniformly dense colloidal waterproof layer, effectively sealing against water leakage. For enhanced waterproofing efficiency, it can be integrated with an HDPE liner in various projects. Bentonite's remarkable water expansion properties are noteworthy: while general calcium base bentonite expands to about three times its size, sodium base bentonite impressively adsorbs water up to five times its weight, expanding 15 to 17 times its volume. The geotextile and nonwoven fabric securely encase sodium base bentonite, imparting protection and reinforcing the structure, thereby bestowing the GCL with notable shear strength.
