The Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) is an innovative product, ingeniously crafted with high-swelling sodium-based bentonite, strategically placed between a specialized composite geotextile and a resilient nonwoven fabric. Created through advanced methods like needle punching or suturing, this composite impermeable material forms numerous fine fiber spaces within the GCL, preventing the bentonite particles from flowing in a single direction. When exposed to water, these particles form a uniformly dense colloidal waterproof layer, effectively halting water leakage. For enhanced waterproofing in diverse projects, it can be combined with an HDPE liner. Bentonite, known for its exceptional water expansion properties, significantly outperforms general calcium-based bentonite, which expands only about three times its size. Meanwhile, sodium-based bentonite expands up to 15 to 17 times its original volume as it absorbs water, increasing its weight by up to five times. The strategic placement of geotextile and nonwoven materials securely locks the sodium-based bentonite between two layers of geosynthetic materials, offering protection, enhanced strength, and a cohesive shear strength across the GCL.
